In deciding to seek help for your loved one with Alzheimer's, it is important to note that studies have shown the best environment for these people is one where the stimulus is very low. Our unit is specially designed around the needs for the early and middle stages of the disease. Those in this area need to be able to ambulate (walkers are okay, but there are no wheelchairs). They also should be able to feed themselves, and must be non-violent. In the latter stages, as they require more nursing care, they may be moved to the nursing home section.

Some of the special features in our unit that create this unique environment are:

The rooms are very large to reduce the sense of being closed in.     The unit is limited to sixteen residents. Twelve private rooms and two semi-private rooms are available.     To reduce commotion and stress, there is only one TV with videos, no disturbing PA system, and no phones. The nursing station is enclosed with windows apart from the unit.     To reduce the anxiety of disorientation, the rooms are on the perimeter of a huge open area that is used for dining and activities. A walking area surrounds this central area. When they want to sit down, they just move into the central area; they cannot get lost.     A safe and enclosed outdoor patio is also provided for walking amongst flowers and garden spaces during the warmer months.     Scheduled activities are facilitated by trained, certified activity staff.     Memory boxes outside each room entrance make it easier for the resident to identify their room and provide opportunities to relate to their interests.     Direct care staff receive specialized training to provide care to Alzheimer's dementia residents.
